Dear Mr. President:

First, Happy New Year, Mr. President, and congratulations on a tremendous victory: well-won and truly well-deserved.

I hope your staff allows you to see this letter, it is of national importance.

You, Mr. President, could fix the American cities, which you have described as “hellholes,” and lay blame on the Democrats. You are right, Sir. Most, if not all, major cities are governed by Democrats.

And the Democrats and liberal-minded people are at fault. They are at fault because they readily blame gun control for the humongous amount of city crime.

Humongous? Philadelphia had over 1,000 shootings in 2024. Therefore, humongous applies.

In blaming gun control, they, the democrats and liberals, don’t see the real, fixable problems, and so each new year outdoes the previous year in bloodshed.

      Where does it stop?

It stops with the schools. In Philadelphia, nearly fifty percent of inner-city school children drop out, and most do not read at grade level. They run the streets, can’t get jobs, and end up either incarcerated or dead.

That same group of children are truant and disruptive in the classroom when they show up, thus keeping education away from the children who want to learn. The inner-city schools, made up of poverty-stricken children, are indeed hellholes.

But you can fix it with these four initiatives.

  • First, make it impossible for children in all inner-city schools to drop out

  • Next, put severe penalties on students — and guardians — for truancy

  • And get the disruptive children out of the classroom

  • But teach the disruptive children in a different setting — in a setting where they cannot kill education for other children

If you do this, Mr. President, you will reduce crime, not overnight, but in five to ten years. And you will make a significant difference in teacher recruitment and retention.

These are bold steps, Sir. However, only bold steps can save American children in inner cities. There is not a teacher in the inner-city school system or a Philadelphia Police officer  who would disagree with this proposal, and I have spoken to many of them.

Some Democrats and liberals will point to the school shootings and ask how could you block gun control? But the shootings and the intentional vehicle ramming have nothing to do with the kind of violence in the American cities that I am addressing in this letter.

I’m talking about children shooting children,

I know you understand that Mr. President, as I do.

Gun control will not only not work, but it will be impossible to achieve. It is a figment of the far left’s imagination.

School control is the only way to save American cities.

You can do it, Sir. I know you can.

Thank you, and I send my very best regards. I wish you a Happy New Year and Godspeed in helping you fix America’s problems.

Sincerely,

 Ronald E. Costello
